Ted Gioia states you can judge a person by the experiences that shaped their first 20 years of life.
I find that to be a bit pessimistic for those dealt a rather lucky or unlucky hand. A lot of our experiences in the first twenty years of life aren't our choice. As much as I would like to disagree on a moral basis though, I cannot help but find it true.
How much fate do we have?
"How much" of our lives DO we have control over? And is that quantifiable, or quantitatively observable?
I was thinking how flies have little control over their lives. They go wherever the wind blows, but can still flap their thin wings against their fat bodies.
I'd like to say on a scale from 1 to 10, 1 meaning no control and 10 meaning complete control, that flies sit at around a 2.
Humans, as I'd like to imagine, have better control over their fate than flies do. So comparatively, we're better than flies. I'd say we as humans sit around a 5. It's half and half I'd say.
What's your number?

My parents are a bit overbearing today. I'm always guilted by the idea that "I'll miss them when I move out." Lots of boomers have told me that. But the truth is when I moved out last summer I didn't really miss them all that much. I'm a bit ashamed to admit it, but those days were more peaceful.
But I have no reason to take away my parent's raison d'etre and "fight for my independence." I tolerate their smothering because I know they have nothing else of value in their lives.
It's a bit sad. I wish they'd find value in their own lives. But I guess, that's what co-dependent, depressed parents get you. How am I, their son, supposed to fix my miserable parents?
I can only hope that when I move out that Fox News and CNN goes out of business.

I actually programmed today. And took a three hour nap. Felt good. Ran 5km, did 50 push-ups, 20 pull-ups, 100 sit-ups, and 10 squats because I got lazy. Good day today.
And of course, five things I'm grateful for:
- I'm thankful for the rainy day today
- I'm thankful for the long nap
- I'm thankful for cashews
- I'm thankful for a sleepy day
- I'm thankful for re-arranging my room last week
...and five positive affirmations:
- I deserve peace
- I deserve sleep
- I deserve a calm mind
- I deserve to care for myself
- I deserve happiness
